When Should You Start Training Your New Puppy? – Dog Training in Pittsburgh

Here at Pivotal Dog Training in Pittsburgh, we know you should start training your puppy as soon as possible, just ask our friend and fellow dog trainer in Cincinnati! Puppies are a blank canvas. The way you interact with them and the behaviors they pick up in the first couple of months will shape their actions for the rest of their life. We want to give them the best possible chance of succeeding. Teaching them structure and establishing our expectations of them as a puppy will reduce the likelihood of them developing a behavioral issue later in life. This leads to a happy, stress-free doggie life!

Puppy training with me is always about setting the puppy up for success. I focus on positive, reward-based training simply because puppies thrive on this type of training.  Do puppies need a lot of patience? Of course. Puppies take a little more time to put two and two together, but once they do, they know it well! In general, puppy training covers the basics. If for any reason the  puppy has expressed advanced severe issues such as aggression or serious anxiety, we will still begin with the basics. Once the basics are mastered, we will tackle the more severe issue afterward. Being too aggressive with the training may hurt the dog’s progression instead of helping.

Let’s not forget about the importance of the dog owner! New dog owners learning valuable communication and training skills plays a critical part in their puppies development. When you sign up with me, we will first discuss the specific training goals for your puppy and exactly what you expect to get out of the puppy training. We will then come up with a customized training plan that molds to you and your dogs individualized situation. The training is in-home. This creates and environment that is much easier for your puppy to adapt and transition into the training. We will cover all puppy departments: potty training, crate training, basic commands (Sit, Down, Stay, and Heel), leash behavior, nipping, separation anxiety prevention, socialization, desensitization exercises, etc. All of these are crucial in paving the way to a well-behaved dog!
